ALPENA — Alpena saw higher-than-usual average temperatures in October, with two dates breaking high-temperature records, National Weather Service data shows.

The first daily record was set on Oct. 2, with a high of 85 degrees, beating the 1922 record for that date by 1 degree. The following day, Oct. 3, broke the record for the day with a high of 87 degrees, which beat the 84-degree record set on the same day in 2005 and also ranked as the hottest day last month.

The coldest temperature of the month was 22 degrees on Halloween with an inch of snow.

“October is a transitional season month, and it definitely showed a wide range of temperatures,” Jeff Zoltowski, National Weather Service meteorologist said. “People, I think, forget that we had a string of 80-degree weather … some really great summertime weather, and then it started getting colder with some low 50s until, by the end of the month, it ended with some cold weather and an inch of snow.”

October saw an average temperature of 50.5 degrees, higher than the 47.4-degree long-term average for the month.

The average high temperature for October was 58.5 degrees, which was 0.9 degrees higher than the long-term average high for the month. The average low temperature for the month was 42.6 degrees, which was lower than the 37.2-degree long-term October average.

The Weather Service recorded slightly less precipitation last month than the usual October average, with the 2.86 inches of rain recorded coming in 0.15 inches less than typical.

Snow was seen the last two days of October, and Halloween ended in a small snowfall, bringing 1 inch of snow through the month, 0.6 inches more than the average October.

Northeast Michigan residents and visitors will experience lots of clouds the rest of the upcoming week, with chances of rain from Friday to Sunday. Thursday is the only day for the next seven days to be partly sunny.

According to the National Weather Service forecast, today calls for high temperatures to be about 47 degrees, 51 degrees on Friday, 49 degrees on Saturday, and 52 degrees on Sunday. After the weekend, temperatures will fall into the mid-40s.

Last November saw higher temperatures than usual, with an average of 30.4 degrees, but more snow was seen, with 12.5 inches falling on Northeast Michigan, compared to the average 6.6 inches.

No snow is forecasted for the next seven days, but Friday has a 30% chance of showers between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m.
