ALPENA — Time is running out for residents of Alpena County to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns about a possible expansion of the APlex.

Alpena County and its partners for the proposed project, still in its infancy, have posted a public survey that asks families and individuals how often they use the APlex’s facilities and what they utilize them for.

It also asks for suggestions on how the proposed expansion should be paid for and what percentage should be paid by the public versus private donations or grants.

The survey is available at AlpenaCounty.org and alpena.mi.us.

Officials are considering expanding the APlex in part to build a new community pool there because the current community pool, the Plaza Pool at Alpena High School, is aged. Alpena Public Schools officials want to build a new pool to accommodate a swim and dive team because the Plaza Pool isn’t large enough to host tournaments or competitions.

Other ideas for the APlex expansion listed in the survey include more gym and workout space, a pavilion, and more room for martial arts, gymnastics, and tennis and volleyball courts.

Alpena County Administrator Mary Catherine Hannah said the survey will be online until about the end of the month and the results will be shared with the community during a special public charette slated for 5 p.m. Dec. 15 at the APlex, 701 Woodward Ave.

That meeting will allow residents an opportunity to help in the design process.
