ALPENA -- Art in the Loft is prepping for its signature fundraiser event, with a new theme this year: Elements of Art.

The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9. Festivities include the popular small plate challenge from four local chefs, live music by the Dan White Quartet, unique bidding experiences, signature cocktails, and more.

Chefs competing in the small plate challenge are Kevin Peterson of Red Brick Tap and Barrel, Ben Darga of Thunder Bay Catering, Reid Krebs of Blue Moon Cafe, and Annette Carlson of Save Your Fork.

The silent auction will be once again a mobile bidding experience, and the live auction will feature a variety of signature packages, including a mural on your business, a party on State Avenue, and a chartered fishing trip followed by cooking your fish with a professional chef in Art in the Loft's kitchen.

Tickets are $100 each, on sale now at artintheloft.org. Each ticket includes $20 in drink tickets, a ticket to all four chefs' booths, two heads and tails beads for a chance to win great prizes, and the ability to bid on all live and silent auction items.

On top of that, it's a fundraiser to continue providing art programs and scholarships to allow everyone to experience hands-on art in Northeast Michigan.

"Our funds for the evening are going to our scholarship program," said Art in the Loft Executive Director Justin Christensen-Cooper. "We sought funds for this four years ago at our fundraiser, and we ended up getting, like, $9,000, and we have since exhausted all those funds. And what that does is it allows us to never turn anyone away for a class. Art class, culinary class, kid, teenager, adult, we're always able to take people. If they apply for a scholarship, it comes out of our scholarship fund, and we're never able to turn anybody away. We want this for everyone. All-inclusive."

The signature event is open to the public.

"We're selling 100 tickets, and that's it," he said. "So people will want to get them."

He said the event is the Loft's way of gearing up for the coming year, which will be their 23rd. He has been there for 11 of those years.

Those who would like to reserve a table for eight can save $100 by purchasing all tickets at once for the price of $700, with all the benefits included.

Couples tickets are $175 for two people, Christensen-Cooper added.

An added bonus is having the beautiful "METALS" artwork surrounding you during the signature event.

"METALS" winners

The juried art exhibit "METALS" is on display now through Nov. 9 at Art in the Loft, on the third floor of the Center Building at 109 N. 2nd Ave. in downtown Alpena. Winners have been announced, determined by juror Jacob Moss Idema, but people's choice voting is open during gallery hours through Nov. 9. Visitors may vote once by ballot for their favorite artist. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The winners are Melissa Smith in first place for "Circulous Aurous," Christine Jonson in second place for "Unity," and Samantha Freske in third place for "Golden Hour." Honorable mentions go to Kamara Marsh, Carol Lund, Jessica Adams, Joseph Donna, Laura Pollak, Marilyn Keen, and Sharon Wade.
