ACC runs best race of season

A perfect storm was brewing last weekend as the Alpena Community College cross-country team headed to Plymouth, Indiana, to run at the Ancillia College Invitational.

A six-and-a-half-hour drive each way, freezing rain and a course that started in the middle of a farmer’s field were all obstacles that the Lumberjacks had to face.

“Before the meet, I told the team a story that my dad, who ran college cross country, had told me,” said ACC Coach Mark Jacobs. “He said that he lived for days like today. The worse the conditions, the better for him, as everyone already had built-in excuses not to run well. He used their excuses to his advantage and ran his best races on the worst days.”

That is exactly what the Lumberjacks did. They threw out any excuse and ran one of the best races in team history.

Chip Allen (Alpena) continued to climb up the record book as he ran 28.11, putting him at number 11 all-time. Following Allen was Colin Sheahan (Livonia), who ran a 28:38, placing him number 15 all-time. Closely behind Sheahan was Matt Wilbert (Rogers City), who also inched up the all-time list, with a time of 28:49, placing him number 17 all-time. Following Wilbert was Ty Kailing (Reed City), who a ran a career-best 30:12, Jacob Kochanski (Alpena) 32:27, Ben Purat (Novi) 33:36, and Matt Mundy (Sault Ste. Marie) 36:23.

ACC finishes their season on Oct. 27, when they travel to Grand Rapids for regionals.
