ALPENA — A new landmark may grace the campus of Alpena Community College as the ACC president and the ACC trustees on Monday discussed the construction of a new tower.

“I am enthused by it,” said ACC President Don MacMaster. “It would be pretty neat to have as a way to distinguish that area of campus.”

On Monday, as part of a special meeting, MacMaster presented the ACC Board of Trustees Property Subcommittee — whose members consisted of John Briggs, Joseph Gentry II, and Thomas Townsend — with a pitch for a campus beautification project that would involve the construction of a new tower on campus.

According to MacMaster, the tower would go up behind Van Lare Hall and stand between 50 and 60 feet tall.

The tower would have a steel foundation and be comprised of glass windows.

Sitting at the top of the tower would be a music component that would simulate the sound of church bells. MacMaster also mentioned that the tower could potentially be wired to change color periodically.

The subcommittee members seemed receptive to the idea, but, as of now, there is no current plan to bring the proposal to the full Board of Trustees. As of right now, according to MacMaster, there is no set plan for how the project will be funded.

The committee also discussed the renovation and replacement of some of the signs on campus and heard a plan to renovate property near Vane Lare Hall and turn it into a walking path.
