ALPENA — A recent powerlifting meet in Alpena saw the event’s largest turnout yet, with 14 participants — seven women and seven men.
A group of men from the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center showed up at the event, as did Cristi Johnson’s group of gals from SkellaFit, the latter of whom crushed a lot of personal records. The owner of fitness club GR Strength from Grands Rapids, Crystal Dodds, came by to observe the meet, as she trains some of the women from Johnson’s place online.
The best overall in the men’s division was:
∫ Fist place: Spencer Kraft, with a 5.64 and a total of 1,295 pounds lifted
∫ Second place: Zane Kipfmiller, with a 5.2 and a total of 975 pounds

∫ Third place: Eric Bukowiecki, with a 5.17 and a total 1,065 pounds
The best overall in the women’s division was:
∫ First place: Mallory Miska, with a 3.81 and a total of 555 pounds lifted
∫ Second place: Katie Jones, with a 3.4 and a total weight lifted of 645 pounds
∫ Third place: Elle Bee, with a 3.28 and 775 pounds lifted
Scores are determined by the total sum of three lifts, divided by the contestant’s weight. For men, scores over 5 are considered good, and scores close to or over 6 are considered exceptional. For women, a 4 is considered great for competitive lifting.
The biggest squat bench and deadlifts for men were all performed by Kraft, who squatted 415 pounds, bench-pressed 355 pounds, and deadlifted 525 pounds.
For the women, Bee had the biggest squat bench and deadlift, squatting 290 pounds, bench-pressing 170 pounds, and deadlifting 315 pounds.
Organizers plan to have another meet next year.
