ALPENA — The League of Michigan Bicyclists will hold a multi-day bicycle tour called Sunrise Adventure around the Alpena area starting on Friday.

The League has registration open on its website, but will also hold a registration event at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday. Later in the night, the museum will hold a rider reception that includes food and drinks from local breweries.

Neal Glazebrook, events director of the League, said the tour is a non-competitive event and uses the hub and spoke model, which means each bike trip starts and ends in downtown Alpena.

“It’s almost like you’re vacationing by bicycle,” Glazebrook said. “It’s more about the experience along the way. It’s OK to stop by places that you find interesting and really just enjoy what the community has to offer.”

Glazebrook said tours usually have camping elements, with tents and other gear with cyclists so they can continue a multi-day trail. Sunrise Adventure has three separate trails for each day throughout the weekend.

Friday’s trail travels south towards the Hubbard Lake area. Saturday’s will go around the Old and New Presque Isle lighthouses. Sunday’s goes through Posen in time for the Posen Potato Festival.

Each daily trail also has three options for length. Friday’s trip has 33-, 47-, and 62-mile choices. Saturday has 21-, 40-, and 56-mile options. Sunday has 19-, 35-, and 39-mile options. Glazebrook said the mile totals are rounded.

He also said the 19- and 39-mile options for Sunday are unpaved and go on the North Eastern State Trail.

Aid stations will be placed along each trail with refreshments. Drivers will also cruise around the trails if any cyclists cannot finish the trip for any reason and need a ride back to downtown Alpena.

“The tour may not be for everyone,” Glazebrook said. “I mean, it’s a long ride, but I personally love seeing what people accomplish. I see people improve every day when they go through the tour and accomplish things they thought they couldn’t do. And those accomplishments, it doesn’t matter if you’re 70 or 12. Those accomplishments are theirs and it’s amazing to see.”

Glazebrook said the event currently has a volunteer shortage and asks Alpena locals to join in to support the tour. He said the Alpena Rotary Club has garnered up some volunteers to help, but any support would be fantastic.

To pre-register for the tour, visit lmb.org/sunrise. Registration for adult cyclists costs $225. Non-riders and cyclists younger than 18 can register for free.
