PREP ROUNDUP: Marquette blanks Wildcats

ALPENA -- The Alpena High football team was left licking its wounds after its Big North Conference opener.

Quarterback Jaxon Jurmu threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as Marquette shut out the Wildcats 49-0 on Thursday in the conference opener for both teams.

Alpena (1-1), seeking its first 2-0 start since 2018, couldn't get anything going offensively. The Wildcats fell behind 21-0 at halftime and turned the ball over three times in the first half.

The Wildcats' best chance to score came with 4:08 left in the first half when Kaleb Donajkowski appeared to score on a 17-yard run. Officials subsequently determined that Donajkowski went out of bounds at the 5-yard line and the Wildcats later turned the ball over on downs.

Jurmu threw his third touchdown pass with 8:36 left in the third quarter, a 31-yard strike and then found a hole and ran 60 yards to pay dirt to score with 6:29 left in the third quarter, helping Marquette to a 35-0 lead.

Alpena will look to rebound against Sanford Meridan next week at home.

GIRLS GOLF

Alpena finishes 7th in Petoskey

PETOSKEY -- The Alpena High girls golf team finished in seventh place of 10 teams at Petoskey's BNC Invitational Thursday with a team score of 418.

Sydney Silver led the team with a 98. Grace Bouchard shot 101. Jami Richards shot 106. Katie Bushey shot 113. Lilly Gembel shot 115. Ella McKenny shot 127.

Alpena's JV team also competed in Petoskey Thursday, finishing fifth of six teams. Josephine Cabana led Alpena's JV with a 109. Alivia Garrow shot 115. Faith Dragewicz shot 120. Brook Schroeder shot 124, and Liliana Tolan shot 135.

Harbor Springs 4

ALPENA -- The Alpena High boys tennis team tied Harbor Springs at home 4-4 on Thursday.

Johnny Bender won at one singles for Alpena, 6-2, 1-6 , 106;  Landen Gagnon won at three singles, 6-3, 6-3; Finn Williams and Nathan Pokorzynski won at one doubles, 6-2, 6-2 and the team of Josh Nystrom and Charles Renard at two doubles won, 7-6, 0-6, 10-7.
