LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Alcona football improves to 3-1; Alpena runs well at MSU
HILLMAN — The Alcona High football team improved to 3-1 Friday with a 56-0 win over Hillman.
Alcona’s defense played well and was led by the play of Evan Borsvold and William O’Neill. Both players had a double digit tackle night with 11 and 10 respectively.
Alcona’s offense had many players score and were able to get in the end zone with both the pass and the run.
Scoring touchdowns were Jeremiah Bullis, Garrett Somers, Collin Walker, Evan Woods, and William Liebler.
The Tigers will be home next week against Charlton Heston for their hometown heroes game.

Alpena runs well at MSU
EAST LANSING — The Alpena High boys cross country team placed 11th in the 21 team field at the Spartan Invitational on Friday.
Kenan Knight led the way for the Wildcats with a 34th place finish and a time of 17:36 . The top five runners for the ‘Cats included Knight 34th, Hayden Bacchus, 55th, Braeden Mathis 95th, Austin Reinhardt 99th, and Thurston Imhoff in 102nd.
Bacchus, Mathis, Milo Dahleen, Logan Ruczynski all posted career-best times.
Alpena’s girls’ team final score put them in 15th place.
Emma Dickins (18th) and Samantha Zolnierek (28th) were medal winners. Zolnierek posted a career-best time and Dickins notched her best time of the season.
Following Dickins and Zolnierek for the Wildcats in the team’s top five were Elizabeth Barnhill in 84th, Amelia Roznowski in 97th and Kaelyn Heath in 102nd. Alison Borowski ran a season-best and Lexi Gembel also improved her career best time.

Roscommon 2, Alcona 0
The Alcona soccer team didn’t pick up on Thursday, but the Tigers still turned in a solid performance during a 2-0 loss to Roscommon.
Alcona got a solid performance from its defense and goalie Michael Kevin made 26 saves.
“Our three seniors Carter Upper, Michael Nevin and Dawson Rigby stepped up their game tonight and the rest of the team followed them with outstanding play,” Alcona coach Tim Steiner said. “While we didn’t get the win, the scrappy determination this team plays with is exciting to watch. I am proud of the effort and sportsmanship given on the field tonight by Alcona and looking forward to playing Fairview at home on Monday.”
