Alpena fire kills dog, cat missing

The Alpena Fire Department responded on Monday night to a house fire that claimed the life of a dog and sent the homeowner to the hospital.
The report of a fire on the 100 block of Barry Street came into central dispatch at 11:06 p.m. and, according to the Alpena fire chief, firefighters arrived at the scene within three minutes from the time of initial dispatch.
In a press release, Chief Rob Edmonds said the structure had flames coming out of two of the home's windows and firefighters were notified by police the homeowner was out of the house and safe.
Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire in the single-story residence but discovered a family dog had died. A search was conducted for a missing cat, too, but crews were unable to locate that animal in the residence. The homeowner was transported to MyMichigan Medical Center by a MyMichigan ambulance crew for evaluation of smoke inhalation.
Eight on-duty personnel, nine off-duty personnel, and two auxiliary personnel handled the incident.
Crews cleared the scene at 1:04 a.m. and the fire remains under investigation.
The fire department was assisted by the Alpena Police Department, Michigan State Police, Alpena Power Co., DTE Energy, MyMichigan Emergency Medical Services, and Alpena 911 Central Dispatch.
