Alpena native Kevin Konczak, of Boulder, Colorado, recently anchored the 197 mile Hood to Coast Running Relay race. His team, Boulder Road Runners, broke the 22 year old record in the Super Master’s Division (50+), setting at new record of 20:39:43. Hood to Coast is the largest running relay in the world, called “The Mother of All Relays” and starts from the top of Mt. Hood, to the coast in Seaside, Oregon over a two day period. Each team has a maximum of 12 runners running segments of various lengths.

Konczak ran a total of four segments along with his other 10 team members, setting the record with only 11 athletes. On the final 5.06 mile anchor segment of the race, his team was two minutes behind the record; where he ran several sub-5:30 miles, including a 5:13 mile (eliminating 40 seconds of the two minutes needed in a single mile), after having run 18+ miles, to overcome the deficit and give the Boulder Road Runners the new Super Master’s Record.
