Alcona Community Schools was recently awarded the Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative grant by the Action for Healthy Kids and the USDA Food and Nutrition Service to support the building of a hoop house to support the growing of local food to directly supply to the school for just over $80,000.
As part of the program, AFHK and its partners will provide Alcona schools with in-depth individualized technical assistance to support and guide the implementation of key strategies to improve school meal quality, as well as help us to develop creative solutions to provide nutritious foods for the children we serve.
"Alcona is grateful to continue to add opportunities for hands-on learning and direct application to life skills for all of our students. The new hoop house will only enhance our community garden and hoop house located at Alcona Elementary," Superintendent Dan O'Connor said.
The Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative grants are part of an allocation of nearly $30 million by the USDA FNS to 264 school districts across 44 states and the District of Columbia.
