HARRISVILLE -- Alcona High School senior Carter Upper has received academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Program.
Academic honors is a program designed to celebrate the hard work and strong academic performances of students in high school, showcase their strong academic performance and share them with colleges and scholarship programs. The academic honors for rural areas, Black, Indigenous, and/or Latino students provide an opportunity for students looking for programs that are seeking to recruit diverse talent.
Upper earned national recognition in the rural and small-town categories for his academic performance. Upper is a 4.0 student, active on the varsity soccer, cross county, basketball, and track teams, vice president of the National Honor Society, captain of the Knowledge Bowl and soccer teams, and a dual-enrolled college student in the Alcona Community Schools Early College Program.
"We are extremely proud of Carter and his accomplishment of earning academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Program," Alcona Principal Christie Thomas said in an email. "This award did not come as a surprise to us, as Carter has a reputation as a diligent, dedicated student. We are proud of Carter and look forward to seeing what he accomplishes in his future!"
To qualify for academic honors students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, attend school in a rural area or small town, or identify as African American/Black, Hispanic American/Latino, or Indigenous/Native, and either score within the top 10% of the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test or Preliminary SAT, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams in 9th and 10th grade.
"We're thrilled to celebrate our students and recognize them for the great work they've been doing. We're proud of their strong academic performance in the classroom and on College Board assessments like the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, and AP exams," Alcona Superintendent Dan O'Connor said in a press release. "There's so much that makes our students unique, and receiving this honor reinforces this as an asset for their future. Carter embodies our eight traits of a graduate and our school motto of excellence today... success tomorrow. We are excited to recognize his outstanding academics at a Board of Education meeting this fall."
