Meds Cafe fined again

ROGERS TOWNSHIP -- The owners of Meds Cafe, a marijuana shop in Rogers Township, have been fined $10,000 by the Cannabis Regulatory Agency, marking the second time this year that they had received such a fine.

The complaint was made public on Wednesday and shows the Regulatory Agency alleged that Meds Cafe was 10 days late in providing its 2021 financial statement, violating Section 701 of the Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act, which requires financial statements be provided to the state within 30 days at the end of the fiscal year. The deadline for Meds Cafe was Oct. 31, while Meds Cafe allegedly filed its statement Nov. 11.

The complaint was first made in March 2022, according to a copy of the consent order against Meds Cafe made public by the state on Tuesday.

Larry Powell, the consumer advocate for the Meds Cafe in Rogers Township, stated that the issue happened prior to his employment with the store. However, he said the length of time for a complaint to be served and the amount of money fined are unusual given the violation in question.

"If you look at similar cases, historically, the process did not take so incredibly long and the fines were much less for the same thing," Powell said.

This is the second fine that Meds Cafe has received this year from the Cannabis Regulatory Agency. The previous fine was served in March of this year for failure to turn in the 2020 financial statement.

Meds Cafe has to pay the state $10,000 within 30 days or risk having its license to sell cannabis suspended, according to the consent order.
