Future renovations planned for Alpena High School

ALPENA -- The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education on Monday authorized Alpena Public Schools Superintendent David Rabbideau to take necessary steps to have Clark Construction take over as general construction manager for Phase 2 of the district's Safe, Warm, Dry Bond.
The bond project -- approved by voters in March 2020 -- seeks to provide a variety of different renovations to all APS schools. Some of these renovations include the installation of vestibules, camera upgrades, replacing boilers, and asbestos abatement.
The bond is scheduled to go for five years with 2023 being its third year. The first three years of the bond are part of phase one of the project and have focused primarily on APS elementary and middle schools.
Phase 2 will involve the final two years of the bond, but focus on renovations to Alpena High School. Rabbideau said Monday renovations there are still in the planning stage.
"What we have left is the high school," Rabbideau said. "Asbestos abatements, fixing parking lots or sidewalks, maybe going into bathrooms for ADA compliance and things like that. That's the phase we're in right now, deciding what it will look like."
Rabbideau estimates that the renovations for Phase 2 will be around $9 million.
While plans for the high school are still being discussed, district elementary schools are undergoing renovations this summer with the following renovations currently in progress:
∫ all carpet and asbestos flooring replaced at Besser Elementary along with a new secure vestibule, new unit vents and heating systems plumbing, new classroom cabinets, bus loop and parent pick up lane, camera system, ceiling, and lighting replacement where needed.
∫ a new shingle roof for Lincoln Elementary as well as the replacement of all carpet with vinyl tile and all student bathroom floors.
∫ a new heating system for Hinks Elementary and a finished air handler.
∫ dry fire suppression updates for Thunder Bay Junior High and all carpet replaced with vinyl tile.
The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education on Monday also:
∫ awarded the district's pizza bid to BC Pizza at $7 per pizza for the 2023-2024 school year.
∫ awarded the APS district-wide blinds bids to the following companies: Baremen & Associates who will providing blinds for Alpena High School for $77,901, Creative Windows who will provide blinds for Besser, Ella White, Hinks, Lincoln, and Sanborn elementary schools for a total of $85,626, and McDonald Cabinetry who will provide blinds for Thunder Bay Junior High and Wilson Elementary for a combined total of $44,424.01
∫ awarded Alpena High School CTE Ramp project bids to the following companies: Gen. Trades was awarded to Clark Construction for $80,700, painting was awarded to Denny's Painting for $7,792, plumbing was awarded to Weinkauf Plumbing & Heating for $87,741, and acoustical was awarded to John's electric for $8,528.25.
∫ reelected the following board members to the following positions: Anna Meinhardt as president of the board, Stacey Parr as vice president of the board, and Eric Lawson as treasurer.
