ALPENA — Six Michigan State Police canines who died in the line of duty have been honored in a new memorial that was unveiled this week.
One of the six canines honored is Bane, a 4-year-old German shepherd former canine state trooper with the MSP-Alpena Post, who was partnered with MSP Trooper Jamie Bullis, went missing in Presque Isle County in November 2010.
Around one year later, an informant pointed to a suspect who allegedly shot Bane within hours of him going missing. An investigation followed, but there was not enough evidence to bring criminal charges against the suspect.
Because of the incident, MSP purchased GPS trackers for all canine troopers so they can be followed via phone or computer.
Bane was the second MSP canine to die in the line of duty.
The memorial, which was funded with donations, located next to the Fallen Trooper Memorial at the MSP Training Academy in Dimondale.
MSP said six canines have died while on duty since 1998.
The Canine Unit was established in 1960 by Tpr. Richard Abbott and “Jocko.”
