Annual Aliferis Memorial Race to be held Saturday, Sept. 2

ALPENA -- MyMichigan Health Foundation's Business Relations Committee will host the 22nd Annual Aliferis Memorial Race on Saturday, Sept. 2. More than 100 cyclists, runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels from the Alpena area and across the state are anticipated to participate in one or more of five events including a half marathon, an 18.5-mile bike race, a 6.5-mile bike tour, a 5K run and a 1-mile run/walk.
"This event started as a 5K run in 2002," said Ann Diamond, director of fund development, MyMichigan Health Foundation. "Since then, we've added more events so there is something for the entire family. I'm looking forward to another successful event, seeing familiar faces, as well as meeting some new friends."
Honorary chairs for this year's event are Bernie and Nancy Lamp and their family. Bernie has participated in the Aliferis Race for many years, in addition to being an original member of MyMichigan Health Foundation's Planned Gifts Committee. Bernie and Nancy have set an example of living a healthy lifestyle and will be participating in the race this year.
"The race is not only is a fundraiser for the Medical Center, but it's a fun day for families," said Bernie "It provides opportunities for people of all ability levels. There is a competitiveness to it, but keeps the family fun aspect also. There is no other event like it in our area."
Medals will be awarded to top finishers in each age bracket, as well as trophies for overall top performances. Race details, course maps, honorary chair information and registration specifics may be found online at mymichigan.org/race. All pre-registrants will receive a T-shirt and a chance at several University of Michigan prizes which will be drawn during the awards ceremony. Pre-race check-in will be held on the corner of Chisholm Street (U.S.-23) and Johnson Street on the campus of MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena beginning at 6 a.m. on race day until the time of each event. Race-day registrations will also be accepted.
The Aliferis Memorial Race was named in honor and memory of longtime Alpena General Hospital Pathologist Peter Aliferis, M.D. The race is held in appreciation of his many contributions during his 37 years at the Medical Center and his steadfast dedication to health and wellness. Dr. Aliferis retired in July 2000 and passed away in 2002.
