Airport to receive two EV chargers

ALPENA -- The Alpena County Regional Airport will receive two electric vehicle chargers courtesy of the Presque Isle Electric and and Gas Co-op.
Steve Smigelski, airport manager, was contacted by PIE&G and asked if the airport would be interested in receiving the chargers from the company.
"I jumped at the chance," Smigelski said.
Everything involving the devices, from their installation to their maintenance, is being paid for by PIE&G.
PIE&G officials could not be reached for comment on this story.
Since the airport parking lot is a public parking lot, the new car chargers would be available to the public, meaning anyone with an electric vehicle could use the new chargers, Smigelski said.
The inclusion of the new chargers would make the airport the fourth electric vehicle charging station in Alpena County. The other current locations are at the World Center for Concrete Technologies at Alpena Community College on Woodward Avenue, the Admiral gas station at 906 W. Washington Ave., and Mickey's Motors in Ossineke on U.S.-23 South.
Additionally, there are electric charging stations at Harrisville Harbor, Harrisville State Park, PIE&G stations in Hillman, Atlanta, and Onoway, Osprey's Truck Stop in Hillman, and a downtown lot in Rogers City.
Smigelski is pleased with the donation and believes that they will make a great addition to the airport.
"The airport is like any other business," Smigelski said. "The more utilities, the better."
Smigelski said last week he is unsure when the new chargers will be installed.
