Northeast Michigan schools project flat budgets for upcoming year, data shows

ALPENA — Most Northeast Michigan school districts projected to reduce their overall spending during the 2023-24 school year, but also bring in less revenue, according to information provided by the districts.
The new fiscal year began Saturday and, combined, the school districts project to bring in more than $80 million in revenue, but also project to spend roughly the same amount as data for most schools shows a reduction in both revenue and expenditures.
Data shows that local districts project to have a combined fund balance of more than $15 million.
Alpena Public Schools’ 2023-2024 budget has a proposed revenue of $51,856,240, which is reduced from the $55,068,821 from the 2022-2023 school year.
The district’s 2023-2024 budget also expects $51,737,762 in expenditures, which is less than the $55,000,436 from the previous school year.
This leaves the district’s projected ending fund equity at $11,737,637.
Alcona Community Schools’ budget has a proposed revenue of $10,934,343 which is reduced from the $11,406,263 from last year, and its 2023-2024 budget expects $11,148,558 in expenditures, down from $11,616,899 from last year.
Alcona’s projected general fund balance is $1,280,119.
Onaway Area Community Schools’ 2023-2024 budget has a proposed revenue of $7,812,405, which is reduced from $8,336,731 from the previous school year.
Onaway’s 2023-2024 budget expects $7,604,916 in expenditures which is reduced from $8,202,659 from last year.
Onaway’s estimated fund balance for 2023-2024 is $1,437,742.
Hillman Community Schools’ 2023-2024 budget has a proposed revenue of $5,850,641, which is reduced from $6,591,160 from last year.
Its 2023-2024 budget expects $6,102,633 in expenditures, which is reduced from the $6,988,336 from the 2022-2023 school year.
This leaves the projected general fund balance at $1,008,841.
Atlanta Community Schools’ budget has a proposed revenue of $3,900,641, which is reduced from $4,813,067 from the previous school year.
Its 2023-2024 budget expects $4,050,019 in expenditures, which is reduced from $4,705,319 from the previous school year. This leaves the total fund balance at $743,418.
Rogers City Area Schools and Posen Community Schools did not respond to requests for comment for this story.
Michigan lawmakers passed a record $82 billion budget centered on education last week, which includes $24 billion in funding for Michigan’s schools as the state looks to remedy learning setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schools will receive a 5% increase in per pupil funding, to $9,608 from $9,150, in addition to a $205 million increase across the state in funding for at-risk students.
