Fire department called to deal with gas spill

Approximately 200 gallons of gasoline was spilled at the Admiral Gas Station Wednesday morning due to the business unloading its fueling storage tanks.

According to a press release, the Alpena City Fire Department and Alpena County Emergency Management were requested to assist in mitigation efforts and emergency operations planning.

Once the spill took place, unloading operations and ignition sources were discontinued for safety concerns.

Upon the fire department's arrival, procedures to diffuse the situation by the driver of the haul company were already initiated and a clean-up contractor was dispatched, according to the press release.

There were 11 on-duty personnel who initially responded to the incident and remained on scene for about four hours.

According to an email from Alpena Fire Chief Rob Edmonds, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) are handling the environmental impacts of this incident.

Those who were also requested to be on scene were the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center Fire Department to minimize ground absorption and the Alpena City DPW assisted.

Clean up efforts are expected to begin by a certified environmental contractor Wednesday evening.
