LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Alpena golf team headed to states

DEWITT — Harrison Kaszubowski and Gavin Hamp both shot an 82 and the Alpena High boys golf team finished third at a regional Wednesday at Timber Ridge Golf Course in DeWitt to qualify for the state finals next week.

Alpena finished with a team score of 340 to finish third out of 20 teams. The finals take place June 9-10 at the Fortress in Frankenmuth.

Hamp and Kaszubowski finished 10th with their scores; Anden Marceau shot an 87; Easton Schultz shot an 89 and Avery Spicer shot a 95.

SOFTBALL

Alpena takes 2 from Pinconning

PINCONNING — The Alpena High softball team came out victorious Wednesday in a final tuneup before district play on Saturday with a pair of wins over Pinconning, 10-1 and 14-4.

Alpena plays Traverse City Central at 1 p.m. Saturday in its opening district game.

Rogers City splits with Grayling

ROGERS CITY — The Rogers City softball team (23-8) ended the regular season on a strong note Tuesday, splitting a home doubleheader with Grayling.

Rogers City rallied to win game 1, 11-6.

Kaitlin Nowicki had three hits, including two home runs and four RBI for Rogers City; Callie Rhode had three hits; Elise Muller had two hits and three RBI, Taylor Krentz had two hits and two RBI and was the winning pitcher; and Brooklyn Orr had two doubles and an RBI.

Grayling won the second game 8-6.

For Rogers City, Alyssa Hein had three hits and an RBI; and Rhode had two hits and an RBI.

BASEBALL

Hillman 10, Atlanta 0

HILLMAN — AJ Jones fired a no-hitter and the Hillman baseball team opened postseason play with a 10-0 win over Atlanta on Tuesday in a Division 4 district quarterfinal.

Jones allowed just one walk and struck out 13 in five innings to earn the win.

At the plate, Brenden Rouleau had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored for Hillman; Evan Crane had two hits; Braylon Firman had two hits and an RBI and Jones and Cuyler Schultz each had a hit and an RBI.

Mt. Pleasant 13, Alpena 8

Some late scoring proved to be the difference Tuesday as Mt. Pleasant defeated the Alpena High baseball team 13-8.

The Oilers scored six runs in the third inning to make it 9-3 before Alpena responded with five runs in the top of the fourth to close the gap 9-8. The Oilers then scored two runs in each of the last two innings to hold Alpena off.

Hunter Cohoon had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored for Alpena; Jake Zann had two hits; and Brady Kollen, Gabe Glawe and Kaleb Donajkowski each had a hit and an RBI.

Cards take 2 from Posen

Whittemore-Prescott took 2 games from the Posen baseball team on Tuesday in a pre-district tuneup, winning 22-10 and 16-13.

Whittemore ran away late with a somewhat close game, scoring 17 runs over the last two innings.

Maties Torralba had two hits and three RBI for Posen; Joshua Gardner had two hits and two RBI and Lucas Mercier had a hit and two RBI.

Posen attempted a comeback in game two, scoring six runs in the top of the fourth inning to make it 16-13, but Whittemore held on for the win.

Andrew Budnick had a double and an RBI for Posen and Torralba had a hit and an RBI.

Mackinaw City takes 2 from Alcona

The Alcona baseball team dropped a doubleheader against Mackinaw City on Tuesday, 7-2 and 9-3.

In the opener, Nathan Nardi had a hit and an RBI for Alcona and Gavin Dellar, Evan Borsvold and Owen Borsvold each had a hit.

In the second game, Evan Borsvold had two hits and an RBI and Cayden Hebert had a hit and an RBI.
