LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Track athletes medal at states

HUDSONVILLE — Kelsey Hansen closed out her high school career with a pair of all-state finishes.

The Alcona senior finished second in discus (126-3) and fourth in shot put (36-5 1/2) at the Division 4 state track and field finals on Saturday.

Hansen also finished 14th in the long jump (15-10).

Hansen was one of several local all-state finishers who finished in the top eight of their events Saturday to earn a medal.

Onaway’s Madilyn Crull finished seventh in the high jump (5-2) and eighth in the 100 dash (13.02); Fairview’s Jynessa Larsen was eighth in the 3,200 run (12:04.06); Fairview’s Landon Gelea was fifth in the boys long jump (21-5 1/4); Onaway’s Xavier Santiago was third in the high jump (6-1).

Other local finishers included: Onaway’s Jadin Mix in the 300 hurdles (10th, 43.02); Fairview’s boys 400 relay team (15th, 46.21); Fairview’s 1,600 relay (12th, 3:40.25); Fairview’s Dylan Whitacre in the boys discus (25th, 108-1); Alcona’s Logan Zuchowski in the boys discus (26th, 107-4); Alcona’s Jeremiah Bullis in the boys pole vault (12th, 11-0); Josiah Linsley in the pole vault (15th, 10-3); Larsen in the girls 1,600 run (17th, 5:35.32); Posen’s Lillie Rocco in the girls high jump (4-7); and Crull in the girls long jump (17th, 15-7 3/4).

At the Division 1 finals, Alpena’s Julian Stevens finished 14th in the boys 200 dash, crossing the line in 22.29 seconds.

BASEBALL

Rogers City wins district title

HILLMAN — The Rogers City baseball team came away as a district champion on Saturday, defeating Onaway 8-5 in a Division 4 district championship in Hillman.

The Hurons advanced to the final after defeated Hillman 9-2 in the semifinals. Onaway defeated Posen 18-1 in three innings in the other semifinal.

In the final, Rogers City used early offense to get by the Cardinals, scoring three runs in the first inning and then two each in the next two innings.

Isaac Lalonde led Rogers City with three hits and Blaise Szatkowski had two hits and two RBI.

SOFTBALL

Local teams fall in districts

Several local teams played hard on Saturday, but couldn’t come away with district championships.

In Marquette, Alpena lost in a semifinal to Traverse City West, 8-2 and Central lost in the final to Traverse City West 2-0.

In Hillman, the host Tigers defeated Atlanta 12-0 in five innings and Johannesburg-Lewiston defeated Wolverine 15-0 (3 innings) to set up a Montmorency County final. Joburg came away the victor in the title game, winning 13-2 in six innings.

In Rogers City, the host Hurons defeated Posen 13-1 (five innings) in one semifinal and Inland Lakes defeated Onaway 9-7 in the other semifinal.

Inland Lakes won the district title after beating Rogers City 3-0.
