Holcim Alpena to build solar project

The Holcim Alpena plant will be able to generate 75% of its own electric power needs after it installs a planned solar project, Holcim U.S. said in a news release.

The company has pledged to power all of its U.S. operations with renewable energy by 2030.

Construction of the solar project will begin this year, with commercial operations expected to begin in December 2024.

The solar project follows a recently completed $7.4 million initiative to convert 22,000 tons of tires per year into clean energy at the plant. The plant also plans to upgrade its dock to accommodate larger vessels, meaning fewer trips in and out of the plant, reducing carbon emissions, according to the news release.
