Art and Play Saturday at GLMHC

ALPENA -- A host of activities await people of all ages and abilities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Art and Play.
Disability Network Northern Michigan and Michigan Disability Rights Coalition welcome you to a free community family event focusing on accessible recreation activities that can be enjoyed by people with and without disabilities.
The event will be held at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center Annex (the big blue building behind the GLMHC) at 500 W. Fletcher St., Alpena.
Activities include sidewalk chalk art, Zot Artz, inclusive gaming, SPIRIT Club, eBikes, Leader Dogs for the Blind, and more.
"It's open to the public and all ages. It's for everybody. It's free," said Jeff Niemetta, information specialist with Disability Network Northern Michigan. "The main focus is for people with physical disabilities to just come on down and interact with some of the new equipment and tools that are out there, for basically, recreation purposes."
One example of the kinds of tools available is Zot Artz.
"Kids love making art. At Zot Artz, we design and make adaptive art tools so that children with disabilities can create huge, amazing art pieces," the Zot Artz website explains. "The Zot Artz tools and facilitated art events entertain and teach children at fairs, fundraisers, and festivals, or as part of everyday recreation, education, and therapy programs."
The whole family is encouraged to come check out the event and see all the options available to everyone.
Niemetta added that there will be hunting, sporting, fishing, and gardening equipment to try out as well.
"There's so much out there that people don't have knowledge of, or get the opportunity to even use," he said. "This brings these items into a space where people can enjoy using them, for free."
