Alpena Fire Department responds to DPI fire

The Alpena Fire Department spent two-and-a-half hours Thursday afternoon managing an incident at Decorative Panels International.

The department was requested to investigate heavy smoke somewhere on Alpena’s north side. En route to the area, crews were advised the smoke was coming from the DPI facility.

Upon arrival at DPI, crews were directed by plant operations personnel to a larger pile of board material that had caught on fire in the processing area and removed for extinguishment. The pile was still smoldering heavily and the winds from Lake Huron were pushing the smoke into the residential and business districts of the city.

Alpena fire crews assisted plant personnel in extinguishing the product to prevent the further spread and decrease the nuisance smoke.

No injuries were reported.
