Wildcats fall on Senior Night

ANNA WOODS

ALPENA — The struggles continued Thursday for the Alpena High girl’s soccer team.

The Wildcats took on Traverse City Central and were unable to get into an offensive rhythm, resulting in a 3-0 loss at Park Family Field at Wildcat Stadium.

Difficulties getting the ball into the net and getting open opportunities, proved to be problem areas for Alpena.

Despite the loss, the Wildcats honored its three seniors for Senior Night, who have all been outstanding and important players all season long.

Eve Dragiewicz, Megan Dubie, and Anna Woods will all graduate from Alpena High School in June and plan to attend school at the next level.

EVE DRAGIEWICZ

“All three of them have been quality leaders for the last couple of years. They brought a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm to the team and they will really be missed by all of the players,” Alpena coach Gregg Supiran said. “Anna (Woods), Eve (Dragiewicz), and Megan (Dubie) are all great people off the field and I hope they all find success after graduating.”

Although it was a special night for the Wildcats, a slow start led to TCC taking possession of the ball and rarely ever losing it. The Trojans attempted several shots on goal but couldn’t seem to get a good shot on net until 12:01 was left in the first half.

Central finally got a shot on goal that deflected off Taylor Parker’s hands and was followed up perfectly by a shot from Emma Jo Papranec.

Parker’s defensive mistake setup Papranec for an easy shot she put right into the net to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

After this goal, Alpena’s defense improved, allowing fewer shots and even less wide-open opportunities.

MEGAN DUBIE

Alpena defended all the way into halftime, maintaining the one goal deficit.

Coming out of the half, Alpena needed to get on the scoreboard in order to have a chance to come back. But the Wildcats’ offense continued to be stagnant as the team could barely get it onto Central’s side of the field.

With around 30 minutes left in the second half, Central scored again.

This goal was shot perfectly out of the reach of Alpena’s goalie, Faith Henski, giving Central a 2-0 lead.

The Trojans extended on that lead even further with around 14 minutes left to play.

“We really need to find the back of the net. We do too much messing around and we really need to focus on getting the ball in space with good opportunities to actually score the ball,” Supiran said.

Alpena takes on Boyne City today.
