ALPENA — Consistency paid off big for Alpena’s John Kurowski and Alcona’s Kelsey Hansen on Tuesday.

The two of them combined to win five individual events and ultimately walked away with a combined seven gold medals and Male and Female Athlete of the Meet honors during the 19th Alpena News Track and Field Honor Roll Invitational at Thunder Bay Junior High School.

Hansen was untouchable in her field events, setting a new PR en route to winning the girls long jump (15-10 1/2) and also won the girls shot put (35-2) and set a new meet record and PR in the discus (123-3 1/2).

She also teamed with Piper Whitefield, Angelina Howe and Addi Beatty to win the girls 400 relay (55.75).

She finishes her high school career with seven individual wins at the Honor Roll Invite after two previous shot put wins and one win each in the long jump and discus.

“I am very grateful to be awarded for (this), Hansen, who will compete in three events at this weekend’s state finals said. “It’s pretty cool. I’ve been doing it for the last three years, watching everyone before me do it. I felt that I did pretty good, working my way up to states.”

Kurowski impressed in the distance events, winning the boys 800 run (2:10.96) and 1,600 run (4:43). He also teamed with Elijah Allen, Hunter Hitzelberger and Braeden Mathis to win the boys 3,200 relay (9:01.97).

“It means a lot,” Kurowski said after being named Male Athlete of the Meet. “I missed last year because I broke both my feet, so coming off that injury, I was just looking to improve. I felt that I did that this year. It was fun to compete against kids from the surrounding area.”

Under sunny skies with a steady breeze, two meet records fell Tuesday — the girls discus, where Hansen bettered the previous best of 117 feet, 11 inches in 2012 and the boys 400 relay, where Alpena’s team of Thorin Rogers, Julian Stevens, Elyja Chism and Ty Dever crossed the line in 44.89, besting the old mark of 45.19 seconds.

Beatty, who will also compete at the state finals this weekend, ruled the girls sprinting events, winning both the 100 dash (13.87) and 200 dash (27.95). Alpena’s Emma Dickins won both the girls 400 dash (1:04.17) and 1,600 run (5:32.72).
