LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Local athletes qualify for track finals

INDIAN RIVER — Jeremiah Bullis is going to be busy in a couple of weeks.

The Alcona High junior had a masterful performance on Friday during a Division 4 regional at Inland Lakes High School, winning the 100 dash (11.41), 200 dash (23.08), pole vault (11-3) and helping Alcona to win the 800 relay along with Sawyer Seminoff, William Liebler and Cole Upper (1:35.91).

Bullis will have a chance to compete in all four events at the Division 4 state finals on June 3.

Bullis was one of several local athletes who qualified for the finals at Friday’s meet. Athletes qualify for the finals by finishing in the top two in their event or by meeting a predetermined distance or time in an event.

Upper qualified in the 110 hurdles after finishing second (17.24) and Onaway’s Jadin Mix qualified in the 300 hurdles with a second place finish (42.73).

Alcona’s Logan Zuchowski won the discus (123-1) and Onaway’s Xavier Santiago won the high jump (6-7).

On the girls side, Onaway’s Madilyn Crull was a triple winner. She won the 100 dash (13.20), 200 dash (27.60) and high jump (5-0). Crull also qualified for the finals in the long jump after finishing second (15-2).

Alcona’s Addi Beatty was runner-up in both sprints to qualify at 13.39 seconds and 27.71 seconds respectively.

Alcona’s Kelsey Hansen was also a triple qualifier, winning the long jump (15-8) and finishing second in both the shot put (35-10) and discus (114-8).

Posen’s Lillie Rocco qualified for the finals as well, finishing second in the high jump behind Crull at 4-10.

At a Division 1 regional in Midland, Julian Stevens was Alpena’s lone state qualifier, qualifying for the boys 200 dash with a PR of 22.29 seconds.

Alpena’s top five finishes on the day, included Quinn Kelly in the 400 dash (5th, 51.78); John Kurowski in the 800 run (5th, 4:32.74); Elijah Allen in the 300 hurdles (5th, 41.53); and the boys 3,200 relay team of Allen, Kelly, Kurowski and Hunter Hitzelberger (5th, 8:17.68).

BASEBALL

Hillman splits with Joburg

HILLMAN — The Hillman baseball team split a non-conference double header with Johannesburg-Lewiston on Friday, winning the opener 11-1 and losing the nightcap 11-4.

Hillman (20-9) took a 9-0 lead after two innings in the opener and never looked back. Trenton Taratuta allowed a run on three hits with a walk and 11 strikeouts.

At the plate, Taratuta, AJ Jones and Braylon Firman each had two hits and two RBI and Evan Crane had two hits and an RBI.

Joburg broke open a tie game in the second game with a six-run third inning and kept ahead from there. Hillman scored three of its runs in the last two innings, but couldn’t rally back any further.

At the plate, Taratuta, Jones and Firman each had a hit and an RBI.

Hillman plays at Houghton Lake today.
