LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Hamp wins; Alpena boys golf team finishes fourth in TC

TRAVERSE CITY — The Alpena High boys golf finished in a tie for fourth at the TC Central Trojan Invitational on Monday after shooting a season-low team score of 321.

Gavin Hamp led the team, shooting 69 and taking first place individually. Alpena’s other scorers included Easton Schultz (79), Anden Marceau (84), Harrison Kaszubowski (89), Avery Spicer (90) and Cameron Stevens (108).

Alpena’s JV team also played in Traverse City and shot 392 as a team. Preston Schuldt led Alpena with an 86. Alpena’s other scorers included Bryce Moe (99), Carter Koproski (100), Luke Miller (107), Carter Green (115) and Gavin Winterstein (115).

Alpena plays again Wednesday at Gaylord Golf Club for the Big North Conference Championship.

Local teams compete in 9/10 Meet

FAIRVIEW — Alpena had a successful day at the Fairview 9/10 Meet on Monday with many of its athletes winning events.

Alpena winners included:

BOYS: Ty Dever in the 100 dash (11.4); Thorin Rogers in the 200 dash (23.8); Quinn Kelly in the 400 dash (52.0); Kenan Knight in the 3,200 run (11:22.1); the 400 relay team of Rogers, Dever, Cole Herman and Carson Najmowicz (47.0); the 3,200 relay team of Kelly, Knight, Hayden Bacchus and Braeden Mathis (9:12.4); and Eric Eades in the pole vault (9-0);

GIRLS: Kaelyn Heath in the 400 dash (1:07.7), 1,600 run (5:53), 3,200 run (13:36.5), the 400 relay team of Clare Lacross, Ava Kolar, Rozlyn Freese and Carmen Frias (56.0); the 800 relay team of Frias, Kolar, Freese and Natalie Maychen (2:02.4); the 3,200 relay team of Elizabeth Barnhill, Amelia Roznowski, Kylie Gagnon and Izzy Szymanski (12:06.8); Melody Kauffman in the shot put (32-4); Kiera Prue in the discus (99-2); Freese in the pole vault (6-6) and Maychen in the long jump (15-2)

Alcona’s Haley Glick got a win in the high jump (4-5) and Alcona’s Piper Whitefield won the 100 hurdles (19.4).

BASEBALL

Hillman sweeps Pellston

The Hillman baseball team ended the regular season on a high note, defeating Pellston 5-0 and 7-5 on Monday.

In the opener, Trenton Taratuta threw a two-hit shutout for Hillman (23-10) while striking out 14.

Taratuta and Edwin Hardies each had a hit and an RBI.

In the second game, Hillman rallied from a 5-3 deficit with four runs in the last two innings.

Xavier Nicholas had two hits and two RBI for Hillman; Evan Crane had two hits and an RBI and Cuyler Schultz, AJ Jones, and Taratuta each had an RBI.

SOFTBALL

Hillman blanks Pellston

The Hillman softball team earned two shutouts on Monday, topping Pellston 17-0 and 18-0.

In the opener, Nicole Barbeau threw a one-hit shutout and struck out eight.

At the plate, Cassidy Benac was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a grand slam; Julia Taratuta was 3-for-3 with two doubles; Gretchen Weiland was 3-for-4; Barbeau, Saige Flaugher and Autumn Lis was 2-for-4 and Hannah Crane was 1-for-2 with a triple.

In the second game, Weiland got the win, allowing two hits and striking out 12.

At the plate, Barbeau was 3-for-5 with a triple; Taratuta was 3-for-3; Weiland was 3-for-3 with a double; Flaugher was 3-for-4 with a double; Isabel Schultz was 2-for-4 and Sydney Klein was 1-for-2 with a double.
