HILLMAN — On Friday, U.S. Army veteran Darrell Hurd had a new roof installed on his house by Story Roofing Co. Inc. as part of the Owens Corning National Roof Deployment Project.

Hurd is a veteran of the U.S. Army who has lived in Hillman for more than 22 years. Hurd was approached by his Veteran Affairs representative, Michael Burzynski, about the National Roof Deployment Project and agreed to participate.

“He saw this deal here,” Hurd said. “I said, ‘If we can get it done, then let’s get it done.'”

The National Roof Deployment Project is a collaboration between the Owens Corning Co. and Habitat for Humanity meant to help provide veterans in need with adequate roofing free of charge.

“I like the representatives, and all the guys that are working have been really nice,” Hurd said, describing his experience. “It’s a nice project.”

Once a veteran is selected for the project, Owens Corning connects them with a local contractor to start working on their roof.

“What we do is pair veterans that need roofs with our platinum contractors, Story Roofing being the local one,” Casey Harris, a senior sales manager at Owens Corning, said.

Story Roofing is based out of Gaylord.

Since 2016, the National Roof Development Project has provided more than 400 veterans with new roofs.

“Story donates their labor and time, and we donate the materials,” Harris said about the project. “That way, folks like Darrell get a free roof out of it, and we get to give someone who needs something a free roof and safety in their house.”
