ALPENA -- Over the last few years, Macy Schram has heard a lot about the Alpena Community College softball program.

So when it came time for Schram to pick a school, her choice was an easy one.

Schram became the newest ACC Lumberjack last week after she signed a letter of intent to join ACC's softball program.

By signing with ACC not only does Schram get to stay home to play, but she'll join a program whose coach and players she's very familiar with.

"I'm super excited for it," Schram said. "I know a lot of the girls and I know Coach (Christin) Sobeck. I love the game and I just knew I wanted to play somewhere that felt like home to me and ACC wound up being that place."

Schram, currently a catcher on the Alpena High School softball team, plans to pursue studies in dentistry.

Her versatility as a position player and ability as a hitter should make her a natural fit at ACC, where versatility is always welcomed in the lineup.

"We are so excited to have Macy Schram," Sobeck said. "She has great power at the plate. The unique ability she has is that she can hit, she can play catcher and she can play infield and outfield. Macy is one of those athletes who appreciates what ACC can offer and to see how much she wants it and to see how excited she is, I'm excited to work with her."

Growing up and playing ball, Schram quickly realized she wasn't going to be a pitcher -- a position everyone wanted to play -- but she did want to touch the ball a lot, so she gravitated to the other side of the battery and played catcher.

"I knew I wanted to touch the ball a lot on every play," Schram said. "It just came easy to me and I kept practicing and getting better at it."

When Schram joins the Lumberjacks next fall, she'll join a team that features some of her former Alpena High teammates and a program that hopes to continue to build on its successes.

As a part of a new division within the Michigan Community College Athletic Association this season, ACC (17-12) currently sits atop the Northern Division and has already qualified for district tournament play and is 9-3 in its last 12 games.

For Schram, signing with ACC isn't just a way to work with Sobeck or her former teammates, it's also a way to continue playing a game she loves.

"(Playing softball) means a lot. I grew up playing softball. I always played softball. There's where all my friends have played," Schram said. "It motivates me to get good grades and motivates me to keep getting better."
