LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Alpena baseball splits with Petoskey

PETOSKEY — The Alpena High baseball team split a pair of Big North Conference games with Petoskey on Tuesday, winning the opener 2-1 and losing the nightcap 3-0.

Each team scored a run in the sixth inning and Alpena (16-6-1) won the game with a run in the top of the seventh when Grant Jarema singled to score Jake Zann.

Alpena scattered seven hits and Kaleb Donajkowski had a hit and an RBI for the Wildcats. Donajkowski got the win, allowing a run on two hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts.

Alpena was held to one hit in the nightcap, a double from Donajkowski.

Hillman wins big vs. Mio

HILLMAN — The Hillman baseball team won big against Mio on Tuesday, beating the Thunderbolts 18-7 and 13-2.

Hillman improved to 17-8 overall and is 6-0 in North Star League Little Dipper division play.

After both teams scored a run in the first, Hillman erupted for 13 runs in the second inning to take control in the opener.

Trenton Taratuta had two hits and three RBI for Hillman and scored three runs; Cuyler Schultz had three RBI; AJ Jones had a hit and two RBI and scored twice; Braylon Firman and Evan Crane each had a hit and an RBI.

Jones got the win, allowing five runs (three earned) on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Hillman scored the bulk of its runs in the late innings of the nightcap to win. Firman led Hillman with three hits, four RBI and three runs scored; Taratuta had two hits and an RBI; Jones had a triple and an RBI.

Taratuta got the win, allowing no runs and no hits with eight strikeouts in four innings.

Hillman hosts Posen Thursday.

SOFTBALL

Hillman improves to 20-5

HILLMAN — The Hillman softball team continued to win on Tuesday, beating Mio 11-0 and 16-1 (five innings).

In the opener, Nicole Barbeau threw a no-hitter while striking out 15 of the 18 batters she faced.

At the plate, Barbeau went 3-for-4; Autumn Lis was 2-for-3 with two doubles; Hannah Crane was 3-for-3 and Gretchen Weiland was 2-for-3 with two doubles.

In game two, Weiland threw a no hitter, fanning 15 of the 18 batters she faced. At the plate, Isabel Schultz went 2-for-4, Barbeau went 2-for-4 with one going yard and the other an inside-the-park home run.

Other hits came from Saige Flaugher, Kendall Gruschke (double), Weiland, Brooke Bennett, Julia Taratuta, and Sydney Klein.

Rogers City splits with Alcona

ROGERS CITY — The Rogers City softball team split a pair of games with Alcona on Monday, winning the opener 11-1 and losing the second game 5-3.

In the opener, McKenna Hardies was the winning pitcher, allowing a run on four hits while striking out five. Brooklyn Orr had four hits for Rogers City including two doubles and two RBI. Chelsie Bielas had three hits and an RBI and Callie Rhode had two hits with 2 RBI.

In the second game, Alcona rallied from a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the third inning to win. Miah Schopfer led Alcona with three hits and an RBI and Baylee Goddard had two hits and an RBI. Schopfer got the win, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits with a strikeout.

Krentz took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out. The Hurons got two hits from Krentz and one each from Tulgestka, Orr, Rhode, Hardies, Bielas, and Kaitlyn Crawford.

Rogers City went 2-1 during a tournament in Tawas on Saturday. The Hurons beat Carrolton 19-4 and Merrill 7-1 before losing to St. Louis 12-3.

Kaitlin Nowicki had seven hits on the day for Rogers City; Orr, and Rhode both had five hits while Tulgestka had four.
