Alleged kidnapper case to be handled in juvenile court

ALPENA — The case against 17-year-old Noah Adkins for an alleged attempted kidnapping has been dismissed from Alpena’s 88th District Court and will now be handled in juvenile court.

Adkins’ defense lawyer, Julie Miller, filed for dismissal of his case in 88th District Court under the argument that he was wrongfully charged as an adult. According to court records, Adkins’ case was dismissed from district court last Thursday.

Adkins was arraigned on May 11 on one count of attempted kidnapping/child enticement, one count of attempted assault to do great bodily harm less than murder, and one count of assault and battery. He was automatically charged as an adult at that time.

Miller revealed during a probable cause conference last week that Adkins’ charges didn’t meet the requirements necessary for an immediate trial as an adult and thus the case should be dismissed and retried in family court. The prosecution has since made that submission.

On May 10, according to a news release by the Michigan State Police, Adkins allegedly approached an eight-year-old girl in her backyard and attempted to restrain her by covering her mouth. The alleged victim was able to escape and her 13-year-old brother — who witnessed the alleged kidnapping attempt take place — shot Adkins with a slingshot in the head and chest.

Upon their arrival at the alleged victim’s house, Michigan State Police-Alpena Post troopers canvassed the area and located Adkins hiding at a nearby gas station and took him into custody. Police identified him as the assailant by the wounds on his head and chest. While in custody, he confessed that his plans were to severely beat the alleged victim.
