Alpena hockey players earn all-state honors

ALPENA -- After a record-setting season in which it set a new program record for wins and advanced to the Division 2 quarterfinals, the Alpena High School hockey team had several players honored for their accomplishments during the 2022-23 season.

Seniors Anden Marceau and Aidan Schultz were named to the Division 2 all-state first team, sophomores Harrison Kaszubowski and Reid Meinhardt and senior Brody Thompson were named to the second team and senior Jack Steinke earned a Division 2 honorable mention.

The all-state teams are picked by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association.

Marceau tallied 30 goals and 39 assists for 69 points in 26 games. Ten of his goals came on the power-play and tallied the game-winner in a district final win over Marquette at Northern Lights Arena. He also had eight games with at least two-goals.

Kaszubowski finished with 30 goals and 34 assists for 64 points, playing on Alpena's top line with Marceau and Meinhardt.

Schultz backstopped Alpena to 20 wins against just two losses and finished with eight shutouts, including one in a district win over Traverse City Central. He finished with a 1.41 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.

Meinhardt finished with 19 goals and 45 assists for 64 points in 28 games as a key playmaker on Alpena's top line.

Steinke tallied 15 points on the season (4 goals and 11 assists) but was a leader on Alpena's blue line, often tasked with shutting down an opponent's top players. The same was true with Thompson, who finished with six goals and 15 assists and provided another talented veteran presence on Alpena's blue line.

Alpena finished the season with a 24-4 record, won a third consecutive regional championship and went undefeated in Big North Conference play to win the conference title.
