PREP ROUNDUP: Barbeau throws no-no for Hillman; Posen teams win big
WHITTEMORE — Nicole Barbeau was brilliant in the circle on Monday, throwing a no-hitter to lead the Hillman softball team past Whittemore-Prescott 10-0.
Barbeau collected four hits in four at bats to help lead Hillman to victory. Barbeau tripled in the first, singled in the third, doubled in the fourth, and homered in the fifth.
Barbeau surrendered zero runs on zero hits over five innings, striking out 12.
Hillman Tigers Varsity collected 17 hits in the win. Barbeau, Lis, Hannah Armon, Elise Flaugher, Julia Taratuta, and Cassidy Benac each collected multiple hits for Hillman.
Hillman continued to roll, winning the nightcap 16-0.
On the mound, Gretchen Weiland pitched three innings, facing 10 batters giving up one hit and striking out six.
At the plate, Barbeau added another home run, going 2-for-3. Benac went 2-for-2, getting a single and a triple. Isabel Schultz hit a triple and drove in three runs.
Posen dominates Charlton Heston
ST. HELEN — The Posen softball team picked up a pair of easy wins on Monday, beating Charlton Heston 20-3 and 18-6.
In the opener, Posen (4-2) scored three runs in the first inning and extended its lead to 11-0 by the end of the second inning on the way to a win.
Ava Wesner had four hits, including a double and a triple, three RBI and scored four times; Ella Szatkowski and Mallory Donajkowski each had two hits, two RBI and scored twice; Jocelyn Hincka and Faith Cousins each had two hits, two RBI and scored three times.
Hallie Konieczny allowed three runs on one hit with four strikeouts and seven walks.
Posen took a 6-1 lead at the end of one inning in the nightcap, tackled on 11 runs in the second inning and cruised from there.
Wesner had a triple among three hits, five RBI and scored three times; Cousins and Madison Kamyszek each had two hits and combined for three RBI; Konieczny got another win, allowing six runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and six walks.
Posen plays St. Ignace on Wednesday.
BASEBALL
Hillman blanks Cardinals
WHITTEMORE — The Hillman baseball team got back above .500 on Monday, beating Whitemore-Prescott 11-0 and 4-0 in a doubleheader.
In the second game, Hillman (4-3) took a 2-0 lead early and then broke the game open with a seven run third inning to take a 9-0 lead. The Tigers had just two hits, but took advantage of numerous errors by the Cardinals.
AJ Jones had a hit, an RBI and scored three runs; Brenden Rouleau had a hit and an RBI.
Taratuta got the start and the win, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out seven in three innings.
In the opener, Hillman scored one run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. Taratuta had a hit and scored twice and Jones had a hit and an RBI. Jones got the win, allowing a hit and striking out nine in four innings.
Posen takes 2 from Charlton Heston
ST. HELEN — The Posen baseball team’s offense got going early and often in 18-1 and 10-4 wins over Charlton Heston on Monday.
Posen (4-2) took an 11-0 lead after one inning in game one to take an easy win. Posen pounded out 18 hits with Cole Krajniak and Jack Romel collecting two each. Romel also had three RBI and scored three times. Josh Gardner had a hit and three RBI, Isaac Konieczny had two RBI and Andrew Budnick had a hit and two RBI.
Lucas Mercier got the win, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts.
In the second game, Posen broke up a 2-1 contest with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Budnick had two hits and scored twice; Even Themel had two hits and an RBI and Romel had a hit and three RBI. Romel got the win, allowing a run on two hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
GIRLS TENNIS
Harbor Springs 8, Alpena 0
The Alpena girls tennis team came up empty during a match with Harbor Springs Monday, losing 8-0. Alpena scores included:
Bekah Carlson lost at one singles 6-3 , 6-4 ; Aliccia Carroll lost at two singles 6-0 , 6-0; Megan Brown lost at three singles; Kaylie Hincka lost at four singles, 6-1 , 6-1.
Prashali Chhapamohan and Prinali Chhapamohan lost at Alpena, 2-0 , 2-0; Madison Tolan, and Gracie Tulgetska lost at two singles, 6-4 , 6-4;
Keygan Harrell and Addison Burrone lost at three singles, 6-0 , 6-1; Avery Connor and Naomi Ratz lost at four singles, 6-0 , 6-0 .
