New names to be added to Alpena Athletic Wall of Fame

ALPENA — Four athletes and a longtime coach will take their place on the Alpena High School Athletic Wall of Fame tonight.

This year’s inductees are Andrew Marwede, Becky (Jore) Rommel, Michele (Suszek) Yates and Chris Modrynski will be inducted along with longtime track coach Bob Bennett.

Marwede, a 2014 Alpena graduate, played basketball and baseball for the Wildcats before going on to play basketball at Alpena Community College.

With Alpena, Marwede earned first team all-Big North Conference honors in basketball, Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan all-state honors and was named BNC MVP.

At ACC, Marwede was academic all-conference, first team all-Eastern Conference, first team Michigan Community College Athletic Association and first team all-Region XI.

Yates, a 2000 Alpena graduate, competed in track, cross country, soccer and wrestling.

She earned academic all-state and academic all-conference honors and finished her high school career with 14 letters.

She went on to play soccer at Northern Michigan University and competed in track and cross country at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, earning academic all-conference honors.

Modrzynski, a 2015 Alpena graduate, lettered in baseball and hockey, earning a combined five letters.

In baseball, Modrzynski was a two-time Big North Conference first team selection, a two-team all-region honoree and a two-time Alpena MVP in baseball.

He went on to pitch at Western Michigan University were he earned academic all-Mid-American Conference honors twice and was part of the Broncos’ 2016 MAC Tournament Championship team.

Rommell, a 1992 Alpena graduate, was a three-sport star, lettering in basketball, softball and track.

In basketball, she was part of Alpena’s back-to-back regional championship teams in 1990 and 1991 and still holds school records for blocked shots in a game (12), blocked shots in a season (95) and in a career (175).

She ultimately earned six combined letters and was a two-time all-conference honoree and earned an all-state honorable mention in 1991.

She went on to play at both Ferris State University and Saginaw Valley State University, where she served as a captain for both teams. She earned all-academic awards from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twice and appeared in the Division II NCAA Tournament with SVSU in 1997.

Bennett served as Alpena’s boys track coach for 30 years and was also an assistant coach for three years.

In his tenure, Bennett coached three first-team all-state athletes as well as many second and third team all-staters. Additionally, eight school records were set during his time as coach.

Bennett was also a longtime assistant football coach for Alpena and served under 12 different head coaches in 32 years.

All honorees will be honored during halftime of tonight’s Alpena boys basketball game against Traverse City West.
