Alpena clinches share of Big North Conference title
CADILLAC — The Alpena High School hockey team just continues to make things look so easy.
Harrison Kaszubowski scored twice and the Wildcats rolled past Cadillac with ease on Wednesday, 6-1.
Alpena (21-3, 8-0 Big North Conference) earned its third straight win and clinched at least a share of the BNC title.
With the win, Alpena sets up a winner-take-all showdown with Traverse City Central on Friday at Northern Lights Arena.
Alpena previously defeated the Trojans 4-1 in Traverse City in December.
As they have all season, the Wildcats kept the opposing goaltender busy all night — in this case it was Cadillac’s Dylan Quartz — Wednesday and were rewarded for their efforts.
Ian Lightfoot, Anden Marceau, Easton Schultz and Reid Meinhardt each had single tallies for Alpena.
Alpena outshot the Vikings 57-15 for the game and lit the lamp four times in the second period alone on 30 shots.
Aidan Schultz made 14 saves to collect his 17th win of the season.
Kaszubowski gave Alpena a 1-0 lead late in the first period with a shorthanded goal as the Wildcats set the tone for the game early, peppering Quartz with scoring chances.
Marceau lit the lamp less than a minute into the middle frame and Lightfoot (11:36 left), Kaszubowski (8:41 left) and Meinhardt (5:06 left) extended Alpena’s lead.
Cadillac’s lone goal came late in the third period when Jackson Hilt collected a shorthanded tally.
Easton Schultz finished the night’s scoring with a goal on assists from Jack Steinke and Jaden Marchlewski in the final frame.
Alpena will host Senior Night on Friday, during which the Wildcats will honor 10 seniors: Aidan Schultz, Marceau, Marchlewski, Steinke, Trent Fraser, Brody Thompson, Lightfoot, Cam Young, Easton Schultz and James Kuhl.
