ALPENA — The Alpena High School hockey team flexed its muscle over the weekend.

On the heels of a mercy rule victory over Petoskey on Friday, the Wildcats made quick work of the Northmen again on Saturday, downing Petoskey 9-0 in two periods.

Harrison Kaszubowski, Anden Marceau and Cam Young each had two goals for the Wildcats (16-2, 5-0 Big North Conference), who pushed their winning streak to 12 games with ease.

Brody Thompson, Gavin Winterstein and James Kuhl each had single tallies and goaltender Jon Rensberry turned aside five shots for an easy shutout.

Reid Marquardt had four assists on the day, Easton Schultz and Marceau each had two and Young, Winterstein, Garrett Hamp, Luke Miller, Gunner Moe, and Jaden Marchlewski each had one.

“I thought our start was a lot better today than it was yesterday…Today I just thought we were kind of on the gas pedal the whole time and I can deal with mistakes when they’re working that hard,” Alpena coach Ben Henry said. “Today they had made a couple of mistakes here and there, but they also worked a lot harder than they did yesterday.”

Alpena got to work quickly, scoring four times in the opening frame and kept up the offensive barrage with five goals in the second period.

Alpena managed just a pair of goals in the opening period Friday, but kept Gaylord’s goaltender busy with a six-goal second period on the way to a home victory and another shutout.

Meinhardt and Marceau each had a hat trick and they tacked on a combined five assists to finish with a combined 11 points on the night. Kazubowski added a goal and four assists and Marchlewski had a single tally.

Alpena outshot Petoskey 36-2 and Schultz collected the shutout.

Alpena now has eight shutouts on the season, including seven during its lengthy winning streak. In their last six games, the Wildcats have outscored opponents 33-2.

The Wildcats play back-to-back conference games against Gaylord this week. Alpena plays on the road on Wednesday and hosts the Blue Devils on Friday.
