PREP ROUNDUP: Runners compete in cross country finals
BROOKLYN — There were no all-state finishes for Northeast Michigan runners Saturday at the Lower Peninsula cross country finals.
Nonetheless, the five Northeast Michiganders who competed still turned in solid times running among the best competitors in the state.
In the Division 1 girls race, Alpena junior Emma Dickins was 71st, finishing in 19:36.32.
Alpena senior Elijah Allen finished 132nd in the Division 1 boys race, crossing the line in 17:06.27.
Rogers City’s Cole Brege finished 152nd in the Division 4 boys race, crossing the line in 19:07.26.
Alcona runners Cole Upper finished 124th (18:35.90) and Carter Upper finished 209th (20:30.52)
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
ACC splits opening games
ESCANABA — The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team opened the season by splitting a pair of games over the weekend.
On Friday, ACC was narrowly defeated by Gogebic, 57-53.
Jade Schultz led ACC with 25 points and Maddie Wilkinson added 19.
On Saturday, ACC rebounded to defeat Harper 82-57.
Schultz led ACC with 33 points and 20 rebounds, Wilkinson had 15 points and 11 assists and Makayla Kamyszek added 24 points and nine rebounds.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
ACC opens with 2 losses
ESCANABA — The Alpena Community College men’s basketball team opened the season with a pair of weekend losses.
On Friday, the Lumberjacks were edged by Gogebic, 60-52.
On Saturday, Harper topped ACC, 82-74.
James Williams led ACC Saturday with 20 points and 11 rebounds; Davarion Mitchell had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Nick Freel had 14 points.
Both ACC teams will play Lake Superior State University’s JV team on Nov. 14.
