Northeast Michigan votes Republican, against Prop 3

ALPENA -- While all three of the state's Democratic executive officer-holders won reelection and Michiganders passed a proposal enshrining abortion rights in the state's constitution, Northeast Michiganders would have had it the other way.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, all Democrats, each won their reelection bids on Tuesday, according to unofficial results. But a majority of voters across Alpena, Presque Isle, Montmorency, and Alcona counties supported their opponents.

Across those counties, Republican Tudor Dixon earned 60% of the vote to Whitmer's 40%, Republican Matt DePerno earned 62% of the vote to Nessel's 38%, and Republican Kristina Karamo earned 60% to Benson's 40%, according to unofficial results from Tuesday's contests.

A majority of Michiganders approved the state's Proposal 3, which enshrines abortion rights in the Michigan Constitution. However, across Alpena, Presque Isle, Montmorency, and Alcona counties, voters rejected that proposal by a 58% to 42% margin.

Northeast Michigan voters also broke with their fellow Michiganders statewide on Proposal 2, which allows early voting and requires ballot drop boxes, among other measures. While the majority of Michiganders supported that proposal, Northeast Michiganders rejected it by a 52% to 48% margin.

Northeast Michiganders joined their fellow Michiganders statewide in supporting Proposal 1, which sets new term limits and financial disclosure requirements for state lawmakers. That proposal passed statewide and earned the support of 56% of Northeast Michiganders, while 44% of Northeast Michiganders rejected that proposal.
