ALPENA — All of Northeast Michigan has access to strong broadband internet access, according to a map released on Friday by the Federal Communications Commission.
The FCC hopes residents will share corrections to the map, which it developed using data provided by internet providers.
According to the map, all households in the Alpena region have access to fixed internet that meets the FCC’s minimum download/upload speeds, and nine out of 10 have service adequate for advanced internet use.
The FCC map indicates most of the region has access to mobile broadband — 3G, 4G, or 5G service accessible while outside or in a vehicle but not necessarily indoors.
Mobile broadband coverage wanes immediately along the shore of Lake Huron, and a swath on the border between Presque Isle and Montmorency counties dips to only 2% coverage, according to the map.
The FCC’s map – available at broadbandmap.fcc.gov — allows residents to search for their home address to see what services are allegedly available and, if appropriate, file a challenge to correct that information.
An FCC speed test app, designed to help users compare the performance and coverage of their mobile networks to that reported by their provider, can be downloaded from app stores on Apple and Android devices.
