Alpena saw more precipitation, average temps in October

ALPENA — Above average temperatures in Alpena during the day, coupled with cooler-than-normal overnight temperatures led to October ending on par with the historical average for temperature.
A record for precipitation was set on Oct. 18, when Alpena received 1.30 inches of rain and snow, which eclipsed the previous record of 0.96 inches set in 2006.
According to data recapping the weather in Alpena last month, the National Weather Service said the average high temperature for October was 60.1 degrees — well above the historical average of 57.6. Cold nighttime and morning temperatures were much cooler as the average for last month was 35.7 degrees — below the 37.2 degrees long-term average.
Overall, the average temperature was 47.9 degrees, which was nearly even with the 47.4 degree average for October.
For the month, the warmest temperature was recorded at the Alpena County Regional Airport when the mercury climbed to 77 degrees on Oct. 24. The lowest temperature was 27 degrees and was recorded four times between Oct. 27-30.
Alpena received slightly more precipitation than normal last month, but the brunt of it came on the record setting day on Oct. 18 and the next two days afterward. In total, there was 3.78 inches of precipitation last month, which narrowly exceeded the 3.01 inch average.
Weather in Alpena will remain mild for the next week or so, as the NWS forecasts high temperatures in the mid 60s until Monday and then fall into the high to mid 50s.There is a slight chance of rain on Friday and Saturday.
