Trick-or-Treat! Spooky fun for all ages Friday at GLMHC

ALPENA -- Costume up and bring your candy bag to the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday for Trick-or-Treating and a whole lot of spooky fun.
The entire museum will be decked out with elaborate spooky decor, with age-appropriate areas marked. The younger kids will have a section, and there will be a spookier area for older kids and adults.
Joey Jackson is the graphics and design coordinator for Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. He is also in charge of Friday’s Halloween festivities at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.
"We usually get about 2,000 people through the doors," Jackson said of the event. "It's great. It's fun for all ages. It's geared for smaller kids upstairs, and downstairs is a little bit more spooky."
He said Home Depot has donated craft kits so the children can enjoy making crafts, as well as receiving candy and taking in the Halloween atmosphere.
There will also be prizes and giveaways, Jackson said.
This event has been going on since 2010, Jackson said, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, when the museum was closed because of the pandemic.
"It's evolved into a very large event," he said. "It's totally free. There will be tons of candy, giveaways, games. It's just a lot of fun."
A photo booth will be set up for people to get pictures with their family and friends.
"Get here early," Jackson said. "The line gets pretty long to get in, but it's totally worth it."
He said it takes about 20 to 40 volunteers to put on the event.
"It's 100 percent volunteer driven," Jackson said. "We're very fortunate for our volunteers that participate in this. It's pretty cool."
He's excited to be able to present this entertaining event to the community.
"It's the first time we've done this in two years," Jackson said. "We're really excited to bring it back to the sanctuary."
He added if anyone would like to donate bags of candy, they can drop them off at the front desk prior to the event.
The museum will be closed Friday in preparation for the event. The GLMHC is located at 500 W. Fletcher St., Alpena.
