ALPENA — The Rogers City football team will renew an old rivalry on Friday.
On the heels of a 9-0 regular season, the Hurons were one of two local teams announced in the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s playoff pairings on Sunday.
The Hurons will host Newberry (8-1) in a Division 1 8-Player playoff game at 7 p.m., Friday at Gilpin Field.
Posen (7-2) will play at Marion (9-0) at a Division 2 8-Player playoff game, also at 7 p.m., Friday.
The Hurons — who made the playoffs for the second straight season since switching to 8-Player football — will host a Newberry team they’re very familiar with.
The Indians triumphed over Rogers City in the regular season finale for both teams last year and the two schools are former members of the Straits Arena Conference.
Since 1950, the Hurons are 8-10 against Newberry.
Both teams have had impressive regular seasons. The Hurons set a program record for points scored, averaging more than 45 points a game in eight games played. Newberry has allowed just 67 points all season and has earned six shutouts while averaging 42.2 points per contest.
Posen returns to the playoffs after a one-year absence and will play Marion (9-0) for the first time ever.
The Vikings had little trouble during the regular season with its two losses coming against Rogers City in a close game early on and against Au Gres in a shootout last week.
Posen is averaging 42.5 points per game.
Marion made the playoffs for the sixth straight season as an 8-Player team and has scored points at a video game-like pace this season, averaging 64.6 points a game.
The Eagles have advanced to the semifinals each of the last two seasons, losing to Powers North Central both times.
