PREP ROUNDUP: Local runners headed to state cross country finals

SHEPHERD — A career-best day by Emma Dickins earned her a trip to cross country the state finals.

Dickins ran a career-best time for the second week in a row, crossing the line in 18:56, good for 11th place. With her finish, she’s only one of four girls in the history of Alpena’s program to break the 19-minute barrier.

Elijah Allen also qualified for the state finals, finishing ninth in 16:27.

The senior speedster achieved an impressive double by qualifying for the state meet in the 300 meter hurdles in track and in cross country in consecutive seasons.

The duo will travel to compete in the Division 1 Finals at Michigan International Speedway next Saturday.

Alpena’s girls team finished in 10 of the 15 teams in the region. Alpena’s boys was ninth.

Hunter Hitzelberger narrowly missed qualifying with his season-best time of 16:58.

Other Alpena boys finishers included: Hayden Bacchus (19:06.8); Thurston Imhoff (18:33.5, career-best); Kenan Knight (17:43.8); Braeden Mathis (19:14.4) and Austin Reinhardt (19:14.4).

Other Alpena girls finishers included: Cailyn Burrone (23:02.4, season-best), Kaelyn Heath (20:43.2, season-best), Carmen Muller (26:53.1, career-best), Sarah Rabbideau (25:29.8), and Amelia Roznowski (21:24.2, career-best).

In East Jordan, Alcona High runners Cole and Carter Upper qualified for the state finals. Cole Upper finished 11th in 17:39.66, earning a medal and breaking the school record. Carter Upper also qualified for finishing in 17:56.67.

Other Alcona finishers included: Darren Boyat (19:42.02) and Ziggy Villalobos (20:46.46).

All state qualifiers will run next weekend in the finals at Michigan International Speedway.
