ALPENA -- A new hotel may be on the horizon on M-32 in Alpena Township in the vacant property west of the Home Depot.
A special meeting of the Alpena Township Planning Commission has been called for Tuesday at 6 p.m., where the commission will review design plans for the proposed Hampton Inn. The Hampton brand is owned by the Hilton Corp.
Township Supervisor Nathan Skibbe confirmed the hotel plans will be examined and discussed at the meeting. He added that if they are approved the developer -- Thunder Bay Hotels, LLC -- could begin to pull the needed permits and begin construction when they choose.
Skibbe said he didn't want to comment on the details of the hotel or the timeline for it, but rather wait for a statement to be issued from the developer.
The news is welcome, as a previous hotel project proposed for a downtown property on the Thunder Bay River in Alpena was canceled by the developer after increased interest rates and a rise in the cost of materials increased the estimated cost to build the Fairfield Inn and Suites.
