ALPENA -- The Alpena High girls golf team is hoping for an excellent year that could include a big step up from many players.

"I've got a lot of high hopes this season even though it is going to be very tough to beat a few schools in our region," Alpena coach Tate Skiba said.

Skiba is entering his fourth year as head coach and is looking forward to watching how the girls perform throughout the remainder of the season.

There are many players on this team that could definitely take the next step up and become key players, but Skiba already has two players that he believes will help lead the team this season. Senior Bekah Carlson is going into her fourth year on the team and is a golfer Skiba is looking for a successful season from.

"She's shown me very steady improvement every year and I'm hoping that improvement continues. I'm looking to her as one of my senior leaders, no doubt," Skiba said.

Skiba also hopes for a big year from one of his returning juniors, who showed a lot of potential in her sophomore season.

"Another player that has put in a lot of time and effort over the summer is Sydney Silver. A junior that is a three-year player, hoping that she makes some big strides this year as well," Skiba said.

The door is wide open for all of the girls to become top contributors for the team this season and there is still lots of time for improvement.

The Wildcats have already competed in a few meets this season and have already shown their ability to bounce back after a tough loss. Although their first meet at Crystal Mountain didn't go as planned, the team came back and performed much better in their most recent meet in Midland.

The remainder of the season will be filled with tough opponents and many meets where Alpena is determined to put up its best effort.

"It's gonna take a lot to be competitive with teams like Petoskey who have a great golf program and could definitely go to states. But outside of that we can be on par with a lot of those teams, so it's all about putting it all together at the right time," Skiba said.
