ALPENA — Three schools in the Alpena Public Schools system are currently under construction to update the infrastructure and add better security.

Sanborn Elementary, Hinks Elementary, and Thunder Bay Junior High will receive numerous fixes such as security cameras, improved parking lots, and more.

Lee Fitzpatrick, the director of communications at APS, says that construction is focused on three keywords.

“Our motto we’ve been using is ‘warm, safe, and dry’,” he said. “Some areas of the schools aren’t well heated and there was a big push for security cameras.”

The construction bond was passed by voters in the spring of 2020, with plans of this bond dating back several years prior.

Current projects should be completed by August 29, Fitzpatrick said.

“We’re wanting to make sure that students have the three things we set out to give,” Fitzpatrick said. “And I think that they’ll get what they’ve needed for quite some time.”

New projects are planned to continue for Alpena Public Schools until 2025.
