HARRISVILLE ― An Alcona County man died after a drunk driver ran into him last month, police reported today.

Jared Staley, 33, of Flushing, has been charged with operating while intoxicated causing death.

Police believe Staley struck Glennie resident Evan Whitford, 58, on Bamfield Road in or near Glennie on July 9.

Whitford was seriously injured in the incident and later died as a result of his injuries, police said.

Staley, who police arrested the night of the incident on charges of OWI causing serious injury, was arraigned on July 22 on an amended charge of OWI causing death.

A person convicted of that crime can be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, depending on circumstances.

Staley is currently out on bond.
