Northeast Michigan unemployment little changed

By The Alpena News 2 min read

ALPENA -- Northeast Michigan's unemployment rate remained essentially unchanged in July compared to June, ticking down by less than half a percentage point, according to recently released state data.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget recorded the unemployment rate across Alpena, Presque Isle, Montmorency, and Alcona counties at 6.11% in July, compared to 6.42% in June. The statewide unemployment rate stood at 4.3% in July.

The data is not seasonally adjusted.

Northeast Michigan's unemployment rate in July 2021 was 6.03%.

The four counties lost a combined 172 workers from their labor force, a measure of the number of people either working or actively looking for work. The number of unemployed workers -- those looking for work but unable to find it -- fell by 78 workers, according to the DTMB.

The labor force can shrink as people move out of the area, die, retire, or simply give up on trying to find a job. The ranks of the unemployed can shrink either because people found a job or gave up looking.
